This one-day trip runs south from Kabul to Ghazni, capital of the Ghaznavid Empire from 977 to 1186, when Sultan Mahmud turned a garrison town into one of the Islamic world's great centres of art, culture and learning. The two surviving minarets — brick towers that once served as markers on the Silk Road — and the 13th-century citadel, a stronghold for rulers from the Ghaznavids to the Timurids, form the heart of the visit, alongside the Soviet-era tanks and artillery of the Military Open Air Museum.

It suits travellers based in Kabul who want a full dose of Afghan history without an overnight stop: around two and a half hours of driving each way, a guided walk at every site, and a proper Afghan lunch of kabuli pulao in between. Wear sturdy shoes for the citadel's uneven ground, and carry your passport for the provincial checkpoints en route.

Kabul to Ghazni and Back

You leave Kabul at 08:30 for the scenic two-and-a-half-hour drive south, arriving at the Ghazni minarets by 11:00 — brick towers rich with geometric patterns and Quranic inscriptions that once signalled the city's standing to Silk Road caravans. From there you climb to the 13th-century citadel, stronghold of dynasties from the Ghaznavids to the Timurids, for panoramic views over the old town. Lunch is Afghan cooking at its most generous, built around kabuli pulao. In the afternoon the Military Open Air Museum shifts the story forward a millennium, with Soviet tanks and artillery parked in the open air, before the 16:00 return drive lands you back in Kabul around 18:30.
