About this Day Trip

Mes Aynak is one of archaeology's great cliffhangers: a 1st-century CE Buddhist monastery complex — stupas, temples and residential quarters — built over an enormous copper deposit, excavated urgently because modern mining may yet consume the site. This half-day trip pairs it with the Shewaki Stupa on Kabul's edge, a 2nd-century monument of the Kushan Empire (30–375 CE) that once anchored a much larger monastic complex.

At roughly six and a half hours door to door, it is the shortest excursion in our programme and an easy add-on to any Kabul stay — ideal for travellers curious about Afghanistan's Buddhist past, or anyone with a spare morning before an evening flight. The ground at both sites is loose and uneven, so wear closed shoes, and bring sun protection: there is almost no shade at the excavations.

Like our Kandahar and Herat extensions, this day trip is sold as an add-on to any main tour — not as a standalone booking. To fit it in before or after your itinerary, simply add an extra hotel night in Kabul ($60 single / $90 double-twin per room, incl. breakfast) when you book.

Day-by-day itinerary

Shewaki Stupa and Mes Aynak

An 08:30 departure puts you at the Shewaki Buddhist Stupa within the hour — a hilltop Kushan monument of the 2nd century CE whose carvings reward a slow walk around the base. You then continue to Mes Aynak, where about ninety minutes among the excavated monasteries, temples and ancient copper mines comes with your guide's account of the race to document the site before mining resumes. Lunch en route is a highlight in its own right: mantu dumplings and ashak, the Afghan leek pasta. You are back in Kabul by 15:00, leaving the rest of the afternoon free.
