Panjshir Valley

The Valley of the Five Lions, two hours from Kabul.

The Panjshir Valley — "Valley of the Five Lions" — cuts north-east from Kabul between 3,000-metre ridgelines along the Panjshir River. Emerald water, stone villages, mulberry orchards and the mausoleum of Ahmad Shah Massoud make it the most rewarding single-day landscape trip from the capital.

"Panjshir from Kabul": name = "Five Lions"; Massoud's stronghold vs Soviets (1980s) and Taliban (1990s); refuge since Silk Road times; villages preserve traditional Afghan culture (terraced fields, orchards, mud-brick homes). External link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_Shah_Massoud.
